General Hair Care

Natural hair care using essential oils will reduce dandruff, eliminate nits and generally care for your hair.

Hair is composed of Keratin, a protein which also makes up nails.  Each hair lasts from between two to six years before it naturally falls out.  As it begins to move outwards a new hair starts to emerge from the follicle in its place.

Each hair has beside it a sebaceous gland.  This secretes the oil which lubricates each hair as it emerges from the follicle.

The condition of our hair is indicative of our state of health, same as it is with animals.  We all take note when our pets’ coats look dull or have lost their shine because it means they’re not well.  We are pretty much the same but by using essential oils, wonderful natural products, this can be reversed and health restored.

Hair Nits

Recipe One

Spray the hair with apple cider vinegar, until it is wet.  Let it dry.  The vinegar is used to dissolve the glue that the eggs use to stick to the hair shaft.

Buy some organic hair conditioner (or use the conditioner on the Shampoo Page) and to 100ml of that conditioner add:

  • 10 drops of Thyme
  • 22 drops of Tea Tree
  • 15 drops of Eucalyptus
Essential oils for nits

Section the hair and put the conditioner through each section of the hair thoroughly. Massage it into the scalp, making sure that all the hair is generously covered with the conditioner.

Wrap the head with plastic wrap for 30 minutes.

Section the hair again.  Using a nit comb, comb through the hair one section at a time, wiping the comb onto tissue paper.

When the hair is done, rinse under the shower.

Repeat each week until no nits are found.

Recipe Two

Ingredients:

  • Lavender essential oil
  • Juniper essential oil
  • Eucalyptus essential oil
  • Tea Tree essential oil

Directions:

A few drops of each or all of the ingredients can be added to shampoo for regular use.  Add about 5 drops to the conditioner as well.

Recipe Three

Ingredients:

  • 10 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 5 drops Tea Tree essential oil
  • 1 tablespoon vodka

Directions:

Mix the ingredients together and massage into the scalp.  If the skin is very sensitive or irritated, use jojoba or sweet almond oil instead.
